Which maps does MyWay Route Planner use?

4 min read

Short answer: MyWay uses several map services, one set for each of three jobs. To find your addresses it checks Google Maps, Mapbox, HERE, TomTom, Apple Maps and OpenStreetMap and keeps the best match. To put your stops in order it compares results from several routing engines, including Google-based routing, GraphHopper and OSRM. For turn-by-turn directions it hands each leg to the navigation app you choose, such as Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze.

Three jobs, three sets of maps

Job What it does What MyWay uses
Finding addresses (geocoding) Turns “12 Oak St, Unit 4” into a point on the map Google Maps, Mapbox, HERE, TomTom, Apple Maps and OpenStreetMap; the best match for each stop
Ordering stops (routing and optimization) Works out road distances and travel times between all stops and finds the shortest order Several routing engines, including Google-based routing, GraphHopper and OSRM, plus our own optimization logic; the best result wins
Driving each leg (navigation) Gives turn-by-turn directions to the next stop Your choice: Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, Maps.me, HERE WeGo, Organic Maps and others

Why more than one address provider

A route is only as good as its pins. If a provider puts a stop at the wrong spot, the whole route is built around a mistake, and you find out at the curb. No single map database gets every address right, and messy addresses are where they slip: apartment complexes, industrial zones, new buildings and rural areas. MyWay asks several providers and picks the most accurate match for each stop, so one provider’s blind spot doesn’t end up on your route.

Why more than one routing engine

Routing engines differ in their road data and in how they search for a short order. As we explain in why route optimization is so hard, no app checks every possible order. Each engine returns a good answer, but not always the same one. MyWay compares the results and keeps the best route for your stops. The arrival times it shows take traffic into account, as well as the time you spend at each stop and your route settings.

Why you choose the navigation app

Most drivers already have a navigation app they trust and know how it speaks, where it warns about cameras and how it handles lane changes. MyWay doesn’t make you switch. It builds the route, then opens each leg in your preferred app with one tap. When you finish a stop, you come back to MyWay for the next one.

What this means for you

  • Fewer wrong pins. Addresses that confuse one map service are often found correctly by another.
  • A shorter order. The route you get is the best of several results, not the only answer one engine gave.
  • No new navigation app to learn. You keep driving with the app you know.

MyWay is free for routes of up to 15 stops, and Pro takes routes of up to 200 stops. For the difference between putting stops in order yourself and letting software do it, see route planning vs route optimization.
