Delivery Route Planner for DHL Drivers

No. DHL Group has five divisions, and three of them deliver parcels to the door:

• DHL Express carries time-critical international shipments with about 40,000 couriers worldwide.
• Post & Parcel Germany delivers DHL parcels across Germany. In 2025 it handled 2,024 million parcels, 11.7% more than a year before (DHL Group annual report).
• DHL eCommerce runs domestic parcel networks in several European countries, the USA and India.

In the USA, DHL eCommerce hands parcels to USPS for the last mile, and DHL Express has carried only international shipments since it left the US domestic market in 2009. In the UK, DHL eCommerce (formerly DHL Parcel UK) joined Evri in October 2025.

Each division plans routes in its own way. DHL Express couriers get their stops on Android handhelds that run Google’s navigation and fleet software, and DHL Express is piloting Google’s route optimization to put the stops in order. DHL reports that the accuracy of its delivery time windows rose from about 50% in 2021 to almost 90% in key markets (Google Maps Platform).

DHL also helped build Greenplan, a route-planning algorithm developed with the University of Bonn. In 2022 Greenplan’s management bought the tool from DHL, and DHL said it would stay a customer.

In Germany, DHL parcel couriers use Zebra TC57 handheld computers, rolled out across about 4,500 delivery bases to scan parcels and record deliveries (Zebra). DHL Express couriers also work with Android handhelds, but DHL doesn’t publish the model.

DHL doesn’t publish an average. According to the ver.di union, parcel couriers in Germany make up to 220 stops and carry up to 300 parcels a day (ver.di publik). A DHL courier followed by the German broadcaster ZDF in August 2026 delivered 192 parcels in one shift.

At that volume, the stop order matters a lot: saving just 20 seconds per stop on a 220-stop day gives you back more than an hour.

Deutsche Post, which delivers DHL parcels in Germany, employs almost all of its couriers directly and pays them under its collective agreement with the ver.di union. Parcel couriers are in pay group 3: from April 2026 it pays €2,878.61 to €3,603.61 a month for a 38.5-hour week, rising with years of service (pay table). The current agreement runs until the end of 2026. In other countries pay depends on the DHL division, the region and the employer.

Not really. Google Maps lets you add up to 9 stops, including the final destination, and keeps them in the order you enter or drag them — it doesn’t work out the best order for you (Google Maps Help).
