What to look for in a delivery route planner app
5 min read
Short answer: check what the plan won’t let you do, not just what it costs. The monthly price of most route planners for one driver is $5 to $20. The differences that cost you time are in the limits: how many stops a route can hold, how many times a day you can optimize, whether routes are deleted after a week, and whether spreadsheet import, time windows or proof of delivery come only with a more expensive plan.
How we checked. The examples below come from each app’s own pricing page, help center and App Store or Google Play listing, checked on 1–2 October 2026. For prices and free plans side by side, see route planner apps compared. We make MyWay Route Planner, one of the apps we checked.
9 things to check
| What to check | Why it matters | What we found (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Stops per route, free and paid | A busy day that doesn’t fit has to be split into two routes, and two routes are rarely as short as one | Spoke free: 10 stops; RoadWarrior Pro: 120 stops; MyWay: 15 stops for free and up to 200 stops on Pro |
| 2. Optimizations or routes per day | A daily cap can run out by lunchtime if you re-optimize after every change | RoadWarrior Pro: 500 optimizations a day, and every re-optimization counts; Zeo’s cheapest fleet plan: 70 optimized routes a month, about 3 a day |
| 3. How long routes are kept, and where | You may want yesterday’s route back, or to plan on a laptop and drive with a phone | Route4Me’s free plan deletes routes after 7 days; RoadWarrior’s free routes stay on the device they were made on |
| 4. Importing stops | Typing 80 addresses takes longer than driving the first ten | Spoke’s spreadsheet import works only in its Android app and isn’t in the Lite plan; RoadWarrior imports CSV files on Pro |
| 5. Marking stops and notes | You need to see what’s done and remember gate codes | Route4Me marks a stop as visited and adds notes only on its $19.99 Enhanced plan |
| 6. Time windows | Customers who are only home at certain hours | Spoke’s $9.99 Lite plan has no time windows; they come with Standard at $19.99 |
| 7. Proof of delivery | Photos or signatures settle disputes about missing parcels | Often a team feature: in Spoke it’s described for Spoke Dispatch, and OptimoRoute includes it from its $49 Pro plan |
| 8. Navigation | You probably already have a navigation app you trust | Check whether the app opens each leg in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze, or makes you use its own |
| 9. Cancelling and refunds | A yearly plan you can’t get out of is a risk if the app doesn’t suit you | RoadWarrior’s yearly plans may be non-refundable after the trial; RouteXL doesn’t let you combine or switch subscriptions mid-period |
Price is the easy part
The pricing page tells you the monthly price, and most apps for one driver land between $5 and $20 a month. What it rarely shows on the first screen is what the cheapest plan leaves out. A plan that is $5 cheaper but makes you type every address by hand, or deletes your routes after a week, costs more in time than it saves. Read the plan comparison table and the store listing to the end. Mobile-only plans are often described only in the App Store or Google Play listing.
Questions to ask about your own day
- How many stops do I drive on a busy day? Pick an app whose plan fits that day, not an average one.
- Do I get addresses as a list or a spreadsheet? Then import matters more than anything else.
- Do stops change during the day? Then the number of optimizations per day matters.
- Do I need proof for my customer or my company? Check which plan has photos and signatures.
- Will I drive with one phone, or plan on a computer as well? Check where routes are stored.
How to test an app in its free trial
Most paid plans come with a free trial; MyWay Pro has a 7-day one. Use it on a real working day, not on a test route:
- Load a full day of real stops the way you get them, from a spreadsheet, a photo of a manifest or a list.
- Optimize, drive it, and compare the miles and finish time with a normal day.
- Add and cancel a stop on the way, and re-optimize.
- Check what happens to the route the next day, and on another device.
- Before the trial ends, look up how to cancel and whether a yearly plan can be refunded.
If your routes stay within 15 stops, you may not need a paid plan at all. To see whether a paid one pays for itself, read is a route planner app worth it.
