Google Maps more than 10 stops: the limit and 3 ways around it
5 min read
Short answer: Google Maps lets you add 9 stops plus your starting point — 10 places in total, on your phone or on a computer. It drives them in the order you type them and won’t sort them into the shortest route. Got more stops? Split the route in two, or use a route planner app that takes your whole list, finds the best order and still sends you to each stop in Google Maps.
How to add stops in Google Maps
On your phone:
- Search for your last stop and tap Directions.
- Tap More (the three dots), then Edit stops.
- Add your stops. To change the order, hold Reorder next to a stop and drag it.
- Tap Done, then Start.
On a computer: click Directions, enter your start and first stop, then click Add destination under the last one. After 9 stops, the button disappears.
On older versions of the app, the button is called Add stop instead of Edit stops.
What Google Maps won’t do
- Find the best order. It follows your list. With 10 stops there are more than 3.6 million possible orders, and the one you typed is rarely the shortest.
- Send a multi-stop route to your phone. Google’s help says you can’t send directions with multiple destinations, so plan the route on your phone.
- Plan by departure or arrival time. That only works with a single destination.
- Use public transit. Multiple stops work for driving, walking and cycling only.
When you reach a stop, tap Continue to head to the next one.
3 ways to plan more than 10 stops
1. Split the route in two
Plan the first 10 places, then start a second route from the last stop. It’s free and works everywhere. But you still work out the order yourself, and 30 stops means building and restarting three routes during the day.
2. Google My Maps
On a computer, My Maps lets you drop up to 2,000 places on a map and draw directions between them. It’s great for seeing all your stops at once. But it doesn’t sort them either, and it isn’t in the phone app, so you can’t navigate from it.
3. A route planner app
This is what route planners are made for. Add all your stops at once — typed, pasted as a list, imported from a spreadsheet or read from a photo of your list — let the app find the fastest order, then tap each stop to open it in Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps.
MyWay Route Planner does this for up to 15 stops for free, and up to 200 stops on Pro at $9.99 a month. Get the app for iPhone or Android, or use it on the web.
| Option | Stops | Sorts your stops | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Maps, split in two | 10 per route | No | Free |
| Google My Maps | Up to 2,000, computer only | No | Free |
| MyWay Route Planner | 15 free, 200 on Pro | Yes | Free; Pro $9.99 a month |
Other route planner apps work the same way, with different free limits and prices. We compared them in Route planner apps compared.
Does the order really matter?
With 3 or 4 stops, you can usually see the best order on the map. Past that, a bad order adds miles fast, and every extra mile costs you about 76 cents in gas and wear on your car, plus a couple of minutes of your time. Here’s what one stop really costs.
FAQ
How many stops can you add in Google Maps?
9 stops, including your final destination, plus your starting point: 10 places in total. It’s the same on a computer, Android and iPhone.
Does Google Maps put multiple stops in the best order?
No. It drives your stops in the order you add them. You can drag them into a different order, but there’s no button that finds the shortest route.
Can I add more than 10 stops in Google Maps on iPhone?
Not on one route. Split the route in two, or plan it in a route planner app and open each stop in Google Maps from there.
What about Apple Maps and Waze?
Apple Maps takes up to 14 stops and Waze one. Details in How many stops can you add in Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze.
How we checked
We checked Google’s help pages and the apps on 2 October 2026. Google’s help page for multiple destinations says: “You can add up to 9 stops, which includes the final destination”, on the Computer, Android and iPhone tabs alike. The My Maps limit of 2,000 places is per map layer.
For developers, Google sells route optimization separately: its Routes API can sort up to 25 stops per request, at a higher price, and there is a Route Optimization API for fleets. Those are for building software, not for planning your day in the Google Maps app.
